Rahuls personal touch brings relief

LUCKNOW/PRATAPGARH: Radhey Shyam Pasi (37), a landless labourer, has no money or family name to boast of. But he has something that would turn most privileged Congressmen green with envy. He has Rahul's cellphone number.

He said this as he gingerly held a piece of paper from his shirt pocket. "This is his mobile number. Rahulji gave it to me himself," he said.

Radheyshyam, who lost his mother in the Kunda stampede, is being beseeched by people to part with the number but he isn't obliging. "Bahut log maang rahe hain," he said a little boastfully, "But sharing something handed in confidence would be dishonourable," Radheshyam said and promptly changed the topic. Friday saw AICC general secretary and Amethi MP touch down on Pratapgarh.

His high voltage trip is bound to further increase the frisson between Congress and BSP. Amid speculation, Rahul flew to Allahabad and then drove 60 km to reach the neighbouring district which has turned into a VVIP pilgrimage in the past 30 hours.

However, as officials and reporters waited for Rahul to make an appearance at the hospital, he changed his programme and went to the bereaved families.
