Mohsin Khan wants separate T20 team |
KARACHI: Newly-appointed chief
selector Mohsin Khan on Wednesday said he would ask the Pakistan Cricket Board
to have a separate team for Twenty20 cricket.
Mohsin said Twenty20
was already hurting Pakistan's Test and ODI prospects and having a specialise
Twenty20 team -- different from the one for two other versions of the game --
was the only way out.
"Twenty20 cricket has already damaged our Test
and one-day performances. I will be suggesting to the cricket board to have a
separate Twenty20 team," he said at a press conference.
Mohsin, who
replaced former spinner Iqbal Qasim as the new chief selector, said Pakistan had
only a handful of players capable of playing in all formats of the game.
"I believe in having a separate Twenty20 team, because it has hurt
our Test performances. Both forms require a completely different approach and
mindset and need to be kept apart," he said.
Mohsin's first
assignment in his new job will be to pick the Pakistan squad for the Twenty20
World Cup in the West Indies where it will defend its title.
Mohsin
made it clear he would be responsible for the performances of the 15 players he
finally selects for the World Cup.
"I only took up this job as a big
challenge but I have made it clear to the board Chairman that I will not select
any player who is unfit or indisciplined, regardless of whether he is a senior
or junior player," he said.
He said the board had given him no
specific time limit as chief selector.
"There is no time frame given
to me. But the way I see it, as long as I am doing well and remain happy and the
board is satisfied with my work, I will continue to serve as chief selector," he
said.
Mohsin said he remained also interested in a coaching role
despite being the chief selector.
"I think we need to introduce
certain level of accountability and responsibility in the team. The coach,
captain and selectors should be ready to accept responsibility for poor
performances," he said.
